For some it's all about extreme speed, crazy stunts and a ceaseless attack on the laugh muscles, for others this good mood skating title is Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. The downhill madness of the Tony Hawk series is a cool mix of a racing game and skater, with varied locations and original fun characters. Eight cool guys follow Tony Hawk's call to be the best in a worldwide downhill race: Gunnar, the Norwegian gangsta, packs plenty of brawn but not much else; stuck up Tiffany battles against the unjust hardships of the rich and famous; Budd doesn't only take off during risky air tricks (”it's cool, man!”); then there's would-be Malcolm X and conspiracy theorist Ammon, pop starlet Kyla, punk bride Mackenzie, crashed pilot Crash and Jynx, a really sarcastic beauty from the grave (”We're like sisters. We're so alike. It's scary.”). Not forgetting the genius and mad scientist from the seventies. This is one colourful race!

Lending liveliness and individuality to the flamboyant personalities despite the brevity of the dialogues while maintaining the inimitable Tony Hawk style of language and expression was one of the most enjoyable and most exciting tasks during the localisation process. The speech recordings were a lot of fun for everyone involved! At the same time, differences between the American and German subcultures had to be taken into account, for the game caricatures them brilliantly. Gunnar's strained attempts to speak ”OG” (original ghetto) were adapted to local dialect.

Apart from the diversity of speech, this game brought with it the particular requirements of the newly developed Wii, for which a constant dialogue to the developers had to be maintained in order to keep up to date with current terminology.

The versions for Nintendo's handheld consoles are all about showing the locals who's the frontrunner in downhill racing! And helping skater legend Tony Hawk establish the world's best international team of skaters. From the hills of San Francisco to Morocco, Hong Kong, Macchu Picchu, Rio, Rome and other racing locations, each of which have their own characters and difficulties, the road to victory passes by Antonio Segul, the skater stuck in the 80s, who questions Tony's skills - and those of the player.

The game's multiplayer mode allows NDS users to play against fans from all over the world online and in real-time, and to hold a virtual skating tournament.

Transporting the kaleidoscope of characters (including the unforgettable McLachlan and his horned Viking helmet) to the limited screens of the two handheld consoles was one of the translators' most important tasks. Only when you read Scots punk do you get Scots punk!

"Nonetheless, the playable characters are not only clearly distinguished optically - the dubbing actors are really in character, both in the English and in the German voice output, and again leave a positive impression."

"On the other hand, the speech is superb, without exception: Especially the skaters' comments before each round, which you can view individually in the video menu, are not just funny, but also well-dubbed."
